At Playground Expedition, we’ve spent over three decades designing playground sets for kids that serve a dual purpose. Yes, these structures entertain children, but they also create environments where physical, social and cognitive skills develop naturally through play. Our playground sets integrate slides, climbers, platforms and activity panels into unified systems. The scale varies considerably, from compact residential models suitable for modest backyards to expansive commercial installations where more than 30 children can play simultaneously.
Think of playground sets as multi-level play structures where elevated decks tie together different activities into one cohesive framework. They differ fundamentally from standalone equipment. Playground sets integrate these elements. Climbing walls connect to slides, which lead to tunnels, which open onto activity panels. Children move between these components without touching the ground, which creates continuous play patterns that build motor skills and physical confidence.
We design playground systems specifically tailored for Homeowner Associations (HOAs) and commercial areas. These systems are designed with space constraints in mind, fitting within 400 square feet with heights not exceeding 6 feet. Each system includes 2-4 activity stations, such as slides, climbers, and swings, in various combinations. The bolt-together design allows for easy installation by homeowners, typically completed in a weekend. All playground sets are commercial grade, and we do not offer playsets that require non-professional installation.
We also provide playground equipment for a wide range of commercial audiences, including:
For these categories, we focus on providing durable, scalable, and safe commercial-grade playground equipment to meet the unique needs of each environment. By targeting these segments, we aim to provide customized solutions for every type of facility.
Schools, parks, and community centers put kids’ playground equipment through intense daily use. Our commercial outdoor playground sets use galvanized steel frameworks, the kind that resist rust and corrosion even after years outdoors. We pair these frames with commercial-grade plastic components that won’t fade or crack under sustained UV exposure. Depending on age range, available play area space, and the size of the unit, structures can accommodate 5-30 children at a time across multiple play levels. Every commercial set maintains ASTM F1487 certification, verified through independent testing.
Budget constraints affect playground development more often than most people realize. Freestanding play structures and playground equipment mount options address this reality by letting facilities start with core components and expand later. Each piece connects through standardized fittings, so additions integrate seamlessly with existing structures.
Themed designs create memorable experiences. We build pirate ships where the crow’s nest doubles as an observation deck. Medieval castles feature turrets that children actually climb. Space platforms incorporate control panels and portholes. Rather than applying decorative elements that peel away, we build the architectural details directly into the structural framework.
Playground injuries happen, but many stem from preventable design flaws rather than from play itself. At Playground Expedition, safety shapes our engineering decisions rather than existing as a separate compliance step. We build safety considerations into the initial design process, eliminating hazards while preserving the developmental value children gain from appropriate physical challenges.
Industry standards set minimums. ASTM F1487-17 establishes baseline requirements. CPSC Guidelines provide federal recommendations. EN 1176 adds European benchmarks. We use all three as starting points, then go further. Steel gauge thickness increases based on actual stress testing calculations. Coating preparation includes additional steps that manufacturers often skip because they’re not required. These extra steps improve adhesion between coating and metal, extending the protective lifespan.
Impact-absorbing surfacing is available for any playground installation. Create play spaces that are built with safety from the ground up or refresh your current play area with professional surfacing solutions. Engineered wood fiber, poured-in-place rubber, and rubber tiles are available. Each option provides specific fall height ratings based on installation depth. Our layouts exceed ASTM F1487 spacing requirements, ensuring fall zones from different structures don’t intersect. Contact our team today for pricing and service area information.
Toddlers move differently than older children. Their coordination is still developing. Equipment designed for school-age children doesn’t translate down to toddler scale by simply making it smaller. Our playground sets for toddlers limit platform heights. Slide angles stay under 30 degrees because steeper slopes generate speeds toddlers can’t control. Guardrail spacing maxes out at 3.5 inches. Certain playsets like the Fairy Landing have a fall height of 18 inches.
School-age children seek different challenges. Platform heights for older children vary. We provide multiple climbing routes. Vertical ladders offer the most direct path. Rock walls require different problem-solving. Rope nets demand whole-body coordination.

Three decades in this industry have taught us what works and what fails. We’ve installed thousands of playground sets across all 50 states, from coastal Maine to desert Arizona. Our Playologists assess your specific situation, available space, user demographics, budget constraints and maintenance capabilities, then recommend equipment that actually fits your needs. Certified installation teams handle assembly and safety compliance. Customer service continues long after installation, supporting customers through ongoing needs rather than disappearing after the initial sale.
We use pressure-treated pine & cedar galvanized steel, and powder-coated aluminum for metal; and UV-proof HDPE or recycled plastic lumber for plastic components.
We exceed ASTM F1487, CPSC and EN 1176 standards through enhanced steel thickness, superior coating processes and impact-absorbing surfacing with fall zones that exceed minimum spacing requirements.
Our playground sets are designed to last 15-20 years with durable galvanized steel frames and UV-resistant plastic. Regular maintenance can extend their lifespan further.
